The leaks, rumours and confirmation about the Redmi K30 have been making waves on the Internet. Obviously, it’s the Internet. So, it never stops. Today, one more confirmation about the Redmi K30 has been received. Redmi K30 will be the first smartphone to be equipped with the 64MP Sony IMX686 camera sensor.

We already knew that the Redmi K30 will be equipped with a quad camera setup on the back. It was also rumoured to have the 64MP camera, but it wasn’t confirmed which sensor would be used. Till now, Samsung’s 64MP has been used on devices which had the 64MP camera. This is the first time the Sony sensor will be used on a device. It’ll be interesting to see how it performs.

The quad camera setup on the back will also include a 120-degree ultra-wide angle camera, a dedicated macro camera and a depth sensor – which is absolutely useless. I would have loved to see a telephoto camera instead of a depth sensor as it can also perform the job of sensing depth. You know that the portrait mode started with the telephoto camera and not the depth sensor, right? But well, the device isn’t out yet. If it’s priced well, then it would still be an interesting buy.

On the front, there will be a dual camera setup. One of them would be the primary 20MP used to click real photos accompanied by just another depth sensor. Again, ultra-wide camera as a secondary camera would’ve been preferable. But I’ll give it a pass until I see the price.

Redmi K30 will be launched on December 10. Before that, no other device would be launching with the Sony IMX686. The Sony IMX686 matches the Samsung’s 64MP sensor in the specs. Both have a 1/1.7” size and a pixel size of 1.6µm through the pixel-binning technology. So, as the 48MP shot in 12MP mode by default, this sensor will shoot in 16MP mode by default.

Redmi has also posted a video to demonstrate the capabilities of the sensor. In the video, it zooms on the tiny objects placed on the table as well as the eyes of the model. And well, the details you can see in that video even after zooming in is just impressive. Sure, it’s a promotional video and there would be enough lights sitting on the light stands to light up the entire environment. But, that’s still impressive. The real test would be in low light environment though.

The Redmi K30 is a device with so many firsts. It’s going to be the first device to be equipped with the Snapdragon 765G with 5G capabilities. It’s going to be the first device with the 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor. And it’ll be the first Redmi with a punch-hole 6.67-inch display. It’ll also have a 4,500 mAh battery – even though that’s not the first.

Overall, it does look like it’ll be an interesting device. If and when I get the chance of checking out the device for myself, I’ll surely share my final opinions. But until it launches, we might be seeing more leaks and confirmation about this device. So, I’ll keep covering them.
